Shooting at Ridgecrest Apartments injures one

Police: Incident occurred after dispute between teens

POSTED: October 31, 2007 5:07 a.m.
Gainesville police made an arrest soon after a shooting Friday night that left a teenager wounded with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The shooting occurred about 6:30 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Ridgecrest Apartment complex off Cleveland Highway behind the Wild Horse Saloon. Police said a 16-year-old male was shot once in the arm.

Witness Tim Harris, 19, said he heard three shots outside his window at the D building and saw the victim collapse face-down on the ground.

"He started screaming," said Harris, who said a swarm of people gathered and tried to render first aid until emergency responders arrived.

Harris said he saw a silver Ford Escort flee the scene carrying three women and a man. Police were given a description of the car and stopped it about a half-mile away on Park Hill Drive near Enota Avenue, Gainesville police Chief Frank Hooper said.

The suspected shooter, identified as 18-year-old Tyreako Dushone Sims, 18, of Decatur, was arrested and a gun was recovered, Hooper said. Sims was charged with aggravated battery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and cruelty to children in the first degree.

Gainesville Police Sgt. Shawn Welsh said the shooting apparently stemmed from a confrontation between the two teens.

The victim, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile, was in stable condition at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, police said.
