A woman was killed in a fire Thursday evening off Browns Bridge Road, authorities said.

Hall County Fire Marshal Capt. Scott Cagle said the woman, in her 40s, was found in a basement apartment of an 1,100-square-foot home on Lyman Drive and transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

The call came in about 5:38 p.m. and Gainesville firefighters responded first, entering the home, knocking down the fire and finding the victim inside, Cagle said. The house is in the county, but Gainesville provides automatic aid, he added.

Firefighters worked to clear smoke from the house as bystanders watched from a field across from the home.

A fire investigator was sent to determine cause, but it was not available Thursday night. Cagle said it appeared the blaze started in the basement.

Cagle said an autopsy will be performed today to determine the woman’s cause of death.
