Gainesville Symphony Orchestra is shutting down

POSTED: March 28, 2013 2:18 p.m.

The Gainesville Symphony Orchestra will cease operations, the symphony’s board of directors announced today.

The board cited the continuing effects of the recession and the symphony’s inability to raise enough money to continue operating.

“This is a sad day, indeed.” Vanessa Hyatt-Fugate, vice president of the symphony, said in a news release. “We made every effort to save the GSO. But in the end, we did not have enough public support to save it. As a result, the board unanimously made the very difficult decision to shut the doors.”

Hyatt-Fugate said the board wanted to thank the players who performed with the symphony for many years, as well as the symphony’s supporters.

“We hope that a new orchestra can re-emerge at some point in the future,” she said. “The people of Gainesville and North Georgia deserve it.”
