A former American Red Cross executive with a background in finance and accounting is taking over Monday as executive director of the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia.

The organization’s board of directors announced David Arias’ hiring Thursday.

He will replace Rick Aiken, who had served for 24 years in the job.

Arias has “the skills and experience to take our organization to the next level in terms of the services we provide and the work we do on behalf of the animals in our region,” said Sid Chandler, board chairman.

“David also possesses the perfect mix of respect for our past accomplishments and a vision for our future.”

The decision was made after a national search and selection process, officials said.

Arias worked with the American Red Cross for seven years, serving in several positions, including senior consultant for chapter financial management, interim chapter executive for the Central South Carolina Chapter and interim regional chief executive officer for the Greater Piedmont Region.

A certified public accountant, Arias has served as president of his own consulting business, which specialized in business valuations and financial advisory services.

He also has served as director of planned giving and major gifts for Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Ala.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to work with a passionate group of donors, volunteers and staff who have the support of a terrific board of directors,” Arias said.

“It’s an honor to be chosen to lead a team that is dedicated to the mission of creating a community recognized for responsible pet ownership and the humane treatment of animals.”

Arias and his wife, Sherri, who have three children ages 18 to 25, own three rescued dogs and a cat.

“Sherri and I have had a chance to spend some time in Gainesville and the surrounding communities, and we’ve been so impressed with how kind and helpful everyone has been,” said Arias, who lives in Birmingham.

“We look forward to getting to know the people and places in Northeast Georgia as we establish our new home in Hall County.”

The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia is a nonprofit organization based at 845 W. Ridge Road, Gainesville.
