Country Charm donates 8,000 eggs to Georgia Mountain Food Bank

Country Charm Eggs of Georgia helped in the fight against hunger by donating more than 8,000 eggs Wednesday to the Georgia Mountain Food Bank.

Director Kay Blackstock praised the gift.

“In the early days when we didn’t have the cold storage to hold them, it was kind of a scramble — no pun intended,” Blackstock said with a laugh. “It’s great for us, this way, we can store them for longer, so there’s not this big push for the agencies to come and get them and get them distributed, because they have a hard time storing them, too. They can get what they need and can reasonably distribute a little bit at a time.”

The bank has 46 partner agencies in the five counties, Blackstock said, listing Gateway House, Good Samaritan, Joe’s Place and the John Paul II Center as just a few.

Country Charm dropped the eggs off at the bank’s facility on 1642 Calvary Industrial Drive. Food bank workers maneuvered the cartons of eggs to storage with forklifts.

Blackstock said Country Charm is a faithful donor all year, but the day’s larger donation is a special treat in time for Easter.

“We’re thrilled to donate much-needed protein to the Georgia Mountain Food Bank just in time for the Easter holiday,” Brent Booker, president of Country Charm Eggs, said in a news release. “Country Charm Eggs is a multi-generation family business, and we take pride in giving back to our local community.”

Country Charm’s donation is part of a larger effort from the national organization, United Egg Producers.

“Year-round our generous farmers donate fresh eggs to their local food assistance organizations,” stated Chad Gregory, president and CEO of United Egg Producers, in a news release. “We come together during the Easter season to give a little extra and make fresh eggs available to food insecure families across the country.”

This marks the sixth Easter season that the United Egg Producers organized a nationwide effort to give a helping hand to families who do not have enough to eat. U.S. egg farmers are donating nearly 9 million fresh eggs this year, the organization said.

Blackstock said being able to provide enough nutrition is a particular community need with summer around the corner.

“We have an increase, certainly in times when school is out, but the increase has been so high while the economy has been bad that we’re seeing these big numbers of people, families that need assistance all year long,” Blackstock said. “Then when the kids are out of school, that just puts even more pressure on the families, but being able to get the egg donation and the protein is huge for us.”

More than 48 million Americans and nearly 28 percent of children in Georgia, or more than 700,000, live in food insecure homes, the organization said.

While food donations are appreciated, Blackstock said monetary donations are better spent by the organization, not at the grocery store.

“We’re not a grocery store. We have a constantly changing variable inventory of food, and a food drive gets us a nice supply of staple things, but we really can take that dollar and stretch it a whole lot further,” Blackstock said. “Our current return on investment is $8.04.”

The Georgia Mountain Food Bank has distributed more than 1.2 million pounds of food and groceries to residents in five Northeast Georgia counties since opening the new facility in August 2012, the organization stated.
