Drug Free Coalition awards video winners

POSTED: March 27, 2013 12:22 a.m.

The key to living drug-free is being strong, creative, independent and yourself, according to the winning video in a substance abuse prevention contest.

For the second year, the Drug Free Coalition of Hall County challenged students to create videos with drug-free messages. On Tuesday night, the coalition awarded first- and second-place winners at the Red Carpet Award Ceremony at the University of North Georgia’s Gainesville campus. There were 34 teams submitting videos, and the top 10 were shown.

A Gainesville High School team took first place among high schools with a video showing teens having fun without using drugs and those teens sharing the message of being above the influence. Members of the team are Alexis Smith, Ruth Vasquez, Becca Panneck, Carey Sartain and Mariana Latimer.

A team from C.W. Davis Middle School won first place in the middle school division, with a video focusing on the consequences of drug use, including expulsion from school and arrest. Members of that team are Gabrilella Velaj, Blake Coxworth, Savannah Lakey and Mariah Millsap.

Second place in the high school division was another team from Gainesville High, including Bond Syfan, Bailey Armour and Mariana Latimer.

Second place in the middle school division was a team from North Hall Middle School, including True Adams, Brent Futo, Blake Bingham and Gage Gooch.

First-place winners were awarded a $100 gift card, and second-place members received a digital camera.
