2 arrested in dog attack, threat at Gainesville pet store

Cumming men face charges for aggravated assault; dog being held under quarantine

Gainesville police have arrested two Cumming men, one for allegedly threatening customers after the other man’s pit bull bit a child last weekend at a Gainesville pet store.

Police say a dog belonging to Craig Wooke bit 6-year-old David Lane in the face March 16 at a PetSmart store on Dawsonville Highway when the boy tried to pet the dog.

Authorities say Wooke and Darin Lee Dyer Jr. then fled the scene. Dyer then allegedly pointed a gun at a customer who tried intervening in the parking lot.

Officials say both men were arrested Friday, Wooke without incident. Dyer attempted to elude officers by hiding out but was captured, according to Gainesville Police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook.

Holbrook said Dyer has been charged with aggravated assault, a felony. Wooke was charged with being a party to a crime.

Holbrook says further charges connected with the animal attack itself may be pending.

The men were booked into the Hall County Jail. It is unclear if they have attorneys.

The dog was seized by animal control officers and is being held under quarantine.

The boy’s mother, Michelle Lane, said last week doctors removed nine stitches from the child’s face after the bite.

She had struck up a conversation with two customers who had brought their brindle pit bull into the store and her children petted the dog, including her daughter “who is a pit bull advocate,” she said.

After the dog bit the child, Lane asked that the pit bull’s owner stay in the store and cooperate with authorities, but the two men fled. A witness confronted them in the parking lot and said one waved a handgun before they drove away, police said.

Holbrook said warrant divisions from the Hall County and Forsyth County sheriff’s offices took part in the arrests.
