The city of Cumming has approved its end of a proposed agreement with Forsyth County that involves redirecting some sales tax money.

City Council voted Tuesday night to let $5.3 million it’s entitled to from the current 1-cent sales tax program go to the county to build two new parking decks downtown.

The first deck would be by the new jail and courthouse and the other on a lot the city owns near Goodson Drug Co.

In exchange, Forsyth would give Cumming $4 million for the city to use on parks and recreation improvements.

“One of the things that the county and city both want to do is see a renovation ... down at City Park, and we also have some other city park projects that we could use this money for,” said Dana Miles, city attorney.

In addition, the proposal states that any extra money collected from the city’s portion of the sales tax funds would go to Forsyth, but only if the county reciprocated, dollar for dollar, Miles said.

“If we collect $100,000 more, we’ll send that over to the county, they’ll use it for parking deck purposes,” he said. “And they’ll send us $100,000 back that we will use for park and recreation purposes.

“So there’s an even swap on future dollars that are collected on (the sales tax) for that purpose.”

The current sales tax program — known as a special purpose local option sales tax, or SPLOST VI — ends June 30. SPLOST VII collections, which voters approved in a November 2011 referendum, begin July 1.
