Roads now clear after snow disrupts schools, travel

Some school districts closed; cold, breezy day ahead

POSTED: March 6, 2013 11:23 a.m.

Overnight snow in the North Georgia mountains created some road hazards and led to school schedule changes.

Lumpkin County schools are closed today due to the snowy roads; 12-month employees should report at 10 a.m. Schools in Dawson and Towns counties also are closed.

White County schools are under a two-hour delay.

The Blairsville Campus of North Georgia Technical College will open at noon.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews worked through the morning to clear roads in seven counties, according to DOT spokeswoman Teri Pope. They began plowing snow at 1 a.m. in Towns County and had workers doing the same by 3 a.m. in Dawson, Habersham, Lumpkin, Rabun, Towns, Union and White counties.

High winds remain a hazard as well and may continue throughout the day. Skies are expected to clear into a cold, breezy day, with warmer temperatures forecast by the weekend.
