Couple charged in Dawson County arson case

POSTED: March 5, 2013 12:53 a.m.

A Dawson County couple was arrested last week in connection with what authorities are calling a set fire to a home off War Hill Park Road.

James Henry Raines, 31, is charged with first-degree arson. He and wife Gloria Ann Raines, 31, were taken into custody in Dawsonville Feb. 28, according to Dawson County Jail records.

She is charged with making false statements and concealment of facts. Both also face probation violation charges.

State Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said the couple was in the process of being evicted from the Diane Circle house they were renting when the home owned by June Young was torched April 26, 2012.

“The fire ... caused heavy damage to the structure,” Hudgens said in a release on Monday.

Spokesman Glenn Allen said the fire originated “near a love seat inside a bedroom of the home. Only the interior of the home suffered damage.”

An arrest warrant has also been issued for a third suspect in the case.

William P. Thurmond, 45, also of Dawson County, will be charged with first-degree arson, making false statements and concealment of facts, Allen said.

James Raines remains in Dawson County sheriff’s custody with bond set at $30,000 following a first appearance hearing in Magistrate Court on Friday.

Gloria Raines was released Feb. 28 to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office after posting a $1,700 cash bond, according to jail records.
