A Gainesville man was arrested Wednesday on identity theft and fraud charges involving 16 individuals and three businesses, according to a news release from the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

An investigation into David Lamar Beck, 51, started after authorities say he passed a counterfeit check in January to buy a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

With a warrant, authorities searched Beck’s Sardis Road home on Jan. 16 and found copies of fraudulent Georgia and North Carolina driver’s licenses, numerous stolen checks and mail items, as well as a laptop computer connected to a burglary in White County, according to the news release.

Beck is charged with forgery in the first degree, second degree and two counts in the third degree; nine counts of identity theft/fraud; felony theft by taking; and 16 misdemeanor counts of theft by receiving.

Hall County took custody of Beck, who was at the Forsyth County Jail on similar charges. He is now being held in Hall County Jail on $75,000 bond.

The case remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office’s Criminal Investigations Division.
