Fire displaces 4 families

POSTED: February 17, 2013 9:03 p.m.

A Sunday afternoon fire on Lanier Avenue in Gainesville displaced four families.

A home at 989 Lanier Ave. was fully involved upon firefighters’ arrival at about 5:15 p.m., Gainesville Interim Fire Chief Jerome Yarbrough said.

He said the structure, built in the 1940s, had been converted into four apartments.

There were no injuries, he said, but a female resident was checked in the back of an ambulance.

Yarbrough estimated the approximately 3,000-square-foot building would be about an 80 percent loss.

Two stations responded to the call and shut down Lanier and Walker streets while they fought the fire.

Units remained on the scene Sunday evening, checking on hot spots, Yarbrough said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, he said.
