Your Views: Nation needs a new effort to restore morality

POSTED: February 15, 2013 1:00 a.m.

I have been a hunter since my teens and have fired weapons from a BB gun to a 155 mm Howitzer. I am, and always will be, a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

It occurs to me that perhaps we need to consider where we are as a culture and what that portends for our constitutional rights.

The rights and privileges protected by our Constitution and Bill of Rights were protected on the assumption that we held shared values and a common faith. The Bible was the principle text in early American public education and informed the basic beliefs of our forefathers. The fundamental moral teachings our citizens received created a culture of personal responsibility and self restraint. Virtues that allowed and encouraged the freedoms protected by those documents.

Since the Supreme Court ruling in 1963 that forbade prayer in public schools, our moral center board, our guiding principles have eroded. The resulting moral relativism has left us with a declining sense of personal responsibility and self-restraint.

Our courts have ruled that the display of the Ten Commandments in government buildings somehow violates the nonexistent wall of separation between church and state. Even an atheist would find seven of those Ten Commandments advantageous to society.

Perhaps what we need today is a new NRA, something along the lines of a National Religious Action committee, an organization for revival of the values and faith which contributed to making this nation the greatest, most prosperous and most generous nation in history.

If we aren’t willing to return to the values that created an environment of self reliance, personal responsibility and self-restraint, then perhaps it is time to write a new constitution better suited to a socialist state and a morally irresponsible public.
