Shaw runs first-team offense

POSTED: August 20, 2008 5:01 a.m.

ATLANTA — Freshman quarterback Jaybo Shaw saw most of the snaps with the first-team offense as Georgia Tech scrimmaged for 90 minutes at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday.

Shaw filled in for Josh Nesbitt, the sophomore who suffered a shoulder injury earlier in the week. Nesbitt is expected to recover before the Yellow Jackets' first game.

Shaw completed a 35-yard touchdown pass to another freshman, Tyler Melton, as Georgia Tech's first-year players had a big day.

"Jaybo has a good football background," said coach Paul Johnson. "He was coached well in high school. I'm not sure he played as well today as he has in practice."

Two other freshmen — quarterback Tevin Washington and safety Cooper Taylor — had touchdowns. Washington had a 53-yard touchdown run. Taylor returned a fumble 39 yards for a touchdown.

"We ran over 100 plays and we're at the point where I know what they can do," said coach Paul Johnson. "Now, we just have to get ready to play."

Sophomore B-back Anthony Allen, a Louisville transfer not eligible until 2009, ran for a team-high 90 yards on seven carries including a 70-yard touchdown run.

Starter Jonathan Dwyer had seven carries for 84 yards, including a 55-yard TD run.

Senior Calvin Booker was 8-of-12 passing for 88 yards with an interception.

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith, Johnson's longtime friend, watched the scrimmage from the sideline.
