The Georgia Department of Transportation will continue to monitor weather and roadway conditions across Northeast Georgia and "return to work if needed," regional spokeswoman Teri Pope said.

At 2 p.m., crews wrapped up clearing icy roads throughout the Georgia Mountains, after a Saturday snowfall in the region.

Trouble spots included Ga. 2/U.S. 76 west of Clayton and on Ga. 197 outside of Clarkesville near Lake Burton.

“Isolated icing is happening on bridges, in shady areas and in higher elevations,” said Billy Cantrell, Georgia DOT maintenance engineer for Northeast Georgia. "Please be wary if you are traveling in northern Habersham and Rabun counties today."

At the height of the road clearing, the DOT effort involved 55 DOT employees and the use of 25 dump truck in Habersham, Lumpkin, Rabun,  Stephens, Towns, Union and White counties, Pope said.

DOT officials urge motorists to take the following safety precautions in case they come across slippery spots. Be particularly aware of black ice conditions on surfaces such as bridge decks and entrance and exit ramps.
