The tornado watch for Hall County was cancelled late this afternoon.

Various watches continued to be in effect for some Northeast Georgia counties, where the entire region had been expected to remain under a tornado watch until 8 p.m.

The strong storms brought almost 1.5 inches of rainfall to Gainesville recorded in just one hour between 2:53 p.m. and 3:53 p.m. at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport according to the National Weather Service.

Earlier, one person was killed in an Adairsville storm in northwest Georgia, according to the Bartow County fire chief.

Hall County Schools is releasing students, but one Northeast Georgia system, Jackson County, delayed release by half an hour. The Hall school system also announced that all afternoon and evening practices and activities are canceled for today.

The school system will do its best to communicate via email, phone, website and Twitter, Schofield added.

Gainesville City Schools had early release today but the system decided to postpone a reception that was planned rain or shine, though a planned parade earlier had been canceled. The system now plans to reschedule both the parade and reception, Superintendent Merrianne Dyer said.

Weather is expected to turn back to winter conditions on Thursday, with sunny skies and a high near 47, according to the National Weather Service.
