Carnes hits milestone in North Georgia win

POSTED: January 24, 2013 10:40 p.m.

Gainesville grad Jaymee Carnes entered Thursday night’s Peach Belt Conference game needing just three rebounds to reach 500 career boards. The North Georgia junior collected those three boards in the first three and a half minutes of the Lady Saints’ 71-42 rout of Georgia Southwestern State University in Dahlonega.

The Saints (7-9, 5-4) outscored the Hurricanes (3-14, 1-9) 42-25 in the first half behind a 60-percent shooting performance before cruising to the finish.

Carnes’ 500th career rebound was not the only big story of the night as fellow junior forward Mimi Hill finished the game with a career-high 24 points. Hill went 11 of 18 from the field and just missed out on a double-double with eight rebounds to lead the Saints in scoring.

North Georgia ended the night shooting 31 of 59 from the field but was only able to connect on two of their nine 3-point attempts. Carnes had one of the treys while finishing the night with her eighth double-double behind 15 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks.

The Saints will next face the No. 3 team in the nation for the third time in as many weeks when they face Clayton State at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Dahlonega.

CLAYTON STATE WOMEN 85, YOUNG HARRIS 61: Ladondra Johnson led the Mountain Lions (10-6, 4-5) with 15 points in the Peach Belt Conference loss Thursday in Morrow.

Kayla Mobley led Clayton State (17-0, 10-0) with 15 points as the Lakers finished the first half on a 17-4 run to take control of the game.

Young Harris next plays Georgia College at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Milledgeville.
