Council sets filing fees for Gainesville elections

POSTED: January 23, 2013 11:58 p.m.

The Gainesville City Council approved its consent agenda and then spent some time in executive session at its Tuesday evening meeting.

Among the consent items approved, the council voted to pay $60,000 for a new knife grinder for the Chattahoochee Golf Course, amended the down payment assistance program policies and procedures and approved the qualifying fees for the 2013 municipal election.

Residents will have to pay $621 to run for either of the council seats, $35 for mayor and $165.87 for either of the school board seats. The council still needs to set the salary for mayor and the qualifying election dates.

This year will be the first year that the mayor is elected and the council’s current election structure remains intact.

The Georgia General Assembly enacted a new local government structure last year that is made up of one mayor and five council members.

Current Mayor Danny Dunagan, who is in the second year of a two-year term, represents Ward 1, and Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem George Wangemann represents Ward 4. School board member David Syfan serves Ward 1 and Delores Diaz, Ward 4.
