Shops move to new locations at Lakeshore Mall

Demolition under way to make room for new anchor tenant

Renovation at the Lakeshore Mall in Gainesville is moving forward as existing tenants settle into new sites and construction continues.

Kay Jewelers moved into its new location at the mall on Monday, and national retailer Shoe Show opened its Shoe Dept. Encore store last week. The shoe store features a large open floor plan and expanded inventory, along with two television lounge areas, a news release said.

“We are pleased to welcome Shoe Dept. Encore to Lakeshore Mall,” said mall General Manager Michael Weinberger in the release. “Customer feedback has been very positive.”

The completed renovation of the mall, expected in 2015, could boost local tax revenues through property taxes and sales taxes.

Lakeshore’s owner, Garrison Investment Group, is investing more than $20 million to redevelop the mall, and the Gainesville City Council approved making the 50-acre property a tax allocation district, which raises tax money for public infrastructure financing.

Several stores, including GNC, LensCrafters and Body Central Corp., were relocated late last year as part of the renovation, which is designed to help the mall draw more shoppers by attracting more desirable retailers.

One retailer, Dick’s Sporting Goods, already has signed on as a new anchor tenant. Demolition is under way on the portion of the mall between Sears and J.C. Penney, where Dick’s will open its more than 50,000-square-foot store later this year.

Great American Cookies is celebrating its grand reopening on Jan. 30 with the Lakeshore Kids, the mall’s club for children, and a Facebook contest. The event is open to the public and will feature free food and activities for kids. The store moved to its new location last year.
