Habersham County man dead in shooting

Brother charged with murder after altercation

POSTED: January 22, 2013 12:17 a.m.

State and local authorities are investigating a Friday shooting at a Habersham County home that resulted in one man dead and his older brother charged with murder.

Christopher Nicholas Cameron, 28, is being held without bond in the Habersham County jail in the death of Michael Preston Cameron, 22.

“They were in a room by themselves, and the call came in as an ‘explosion,’” Sheriff Joey Terrell said.

Their mother, Regina Cameron, who was in the kitchen at the time of the shooting, called 911.

Officers arrived at the house and encountered Christopher Cameron, “who had his hands up and (was saying), ‘I want a lawyer,’” Terrell said.

“That’s all he’s told us, so we don’t really know (what happened),” he added.

Michael Cameron was airlifted to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville on Friday afternoon after the incident. He died on Friday. Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, in Baldwin is handling arrangements.

Terrell said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation interviewed the mother, who “wrote a statement about them arguing,” but he didn’t have further details.

John Bankhead, GBI spokesman, noted that state offices were closed Monday because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, “but I don’t think the GBI will be commenting” on the investigation.

The shooting took place in the home of the brothers’ grandfather, Henry Cameron, in the 1000 block of Elrod Street in Cornelia, and the weapon used was a .45-caliber Colt Commander handgun, Terrell said.

“We do know there was two shell casings, so we believe there was two shots, but we won’t know for certain until the autopsy,” the sheriff said.
