Mayors place friendly wager on today’s game

POSTED: January 19, 2013 11:59 p.m.

As fans cheer on the Atlanta Falcons or visiting San Francisco 49ers during today’s NFC Championship, the mayors of Flowery Branch and Santa Clara, Calif., will be watching with keen interest.

A friendly wager has been made between the mayors of the teams’ headquarter cities.

If the 49ers win, Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews will receive a case of Wrigley’s chewing gum and Flowery Branch Mayor Mike Miller will have to wear a 49ers jersey during his next city council meeting.

Today, a spokesman for the William Wrigley Jr. Co. said in an email the company has offered to up that ante to a year's supply of gum. Wrigley operates a plant in Flowery Branch.

If the Falcons win, Miller will receive a gift basket of promotional items from California’s Great American theme park and Matthews will have to don a Falcons jersey when his council meets.

According to Miller, the wager came after an interview with the Atlanta newspaper and a phone call from Matthews.

“Good luck, win or lose,” Miller said. “Hope it goes the Falcons’ way.”

Miller also said if any 49ers fans want to “venture” to Flowery Branch and spend money, they’re more than welcome to.

“It will be (very) challenging task to find a Falcons jersey here,” Matthews said. “But with the popularity of the 49ers, Mayor Miller should not have any difficulty finding one there.”

Miller is predicting a 35-7 victory for the home team. Matthews is calling for a close game, predicting a 14-10 victory for San Francisco.

“The excitement is inescapable. From 49er banners flown from resident’s homes, to excited conversations at the grocery store, Santa Clarans are behind their team and ready for the game,” Matthews said.
