Gainesville police probe 2 robberies on the same corner

Women robbed at gunpoint in same local 2 days straight, police say

POSTED: January 19, 2013 11:59 p.m.

A pedestrian was targeted by armed robbers in Gainesville for the second time in two days and in the same location, police reported.

Gainesville police reported an armed robbery Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Central Avenue and Hazel Street, where a pedestrian was robbed Friday afternoon.

Around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to the armed robbery, police spokesman Cpl. Kevin Holbrook said.

Two black males pulled up to a female in a white SUV, Holbrook said, and one of the men approached the woman with a handgun and demanded her purse.

She gave the man her purse, and the suspects drove away in the SUV, he said.

In Friday’s incident, a suspect described as being “white or Hispanic” approached a female pedestrian and demanded her purse. He walked up from behind and showed a gun. She gave up the purse, and the suspect ran off, Holbrook said.

He said that while it is possible that the cases are related, both are still being investigated by police.
