Starter goes down in Bulldogs' first scrimmage

POSTED: August 16, 2008 5:00 a.m.

ATHENS — Georgia starting left tackle Trinton Sturdivant suffered a knee injury in the team's first scrimmage of the preseason on Monday.

Sturdivant, who started all 13 games as a freshman last season, hurt his left knee. Coach Mark Richt said the severity of the injury will be determined by tests.

"It swelled up pretty good, and we're taking the pictures so we'll see," Richt said. "It's just sad to see a guy get hurt."

Josh Davis, a sophomore, moved up to the first-team offense following Sturdivant's injury.

The Bulldogs had a 75-minute kicking scrimmage Monday morning at Sanford Stadium and returned in the afternoon for a two-hour workout in full pads.

Richt said Georgia is "on track" after completing about one-third of its preseason practice schedule.
"We've made progress but we've got a long way to go as we're developing our second and third units, too," Richt said.

Freshman tailback Caleb King rushed for 52 yards on 11 carries and had two catches for 22 yards. Freshman Richard Samuel had 45 yards rushing on 11 carries and added three catches for 26 yards.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford was 11-for-21 passing for 108 yards with an interception. Freshman Logan Gray was 12-for-22 passing for 119 yards with a 6-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tripp Chandler.

Chandler had four catches for 31 yards.

Freshman kicker Blair Walsh made each of his three field goals from 36, 37 and 38 yards.
