Swearings-in highlight Hall work session

New commissioners' 1st votes to be held at Thursday meeting

POSTED: January 8, 2013 12:12 a.m.

The Hall County commissioners’ first work session of 2013 started with the swearing in of new board Chairman Dick Mecum and Commissioner Jeff Stowe.

State leaders and local officials came to the Hall County Government Center for the swearings-in Monday morning, leaving afterward for the new commissioners to move through a light agenda.

Both Stowe and Mecum mentioned the need for more economic development in the county, with Stowe saying that the Ga. 365 industrial park had a lot of good leads and will help bring some good jobs to the area. He said he’ll be responsive to citizens.

“As commissioner, I make you this pledge: I will work tirelessly on your behalf.” Stowe said. “I will be fair and listen to both sides of an issue before I make a decision.”

Mecum said Hall was a great county and he was excited about the future, but he also voiced concern over the economy, calling it fragile. He said the county employees have been tightening the budget, saving millions of dollars.

“Whatever we do from here forward, we’re going to have to protect our county financially, every way we can, protect our employees, and protect the service to Hall County,” Mecum said.

Mecum still managed to mix in some jokes for new Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch, who was sworn in on Friday.

“Something you have to look forward to is being sued,” he said, referring to his application to become a U.S. marshal, when he learned he had been sued about 70 times in his 12 years as sheriff. “I said ‘Is that me personally or as sheriff?’ and they said, ‘everything.’”

Commissioners will consider at their meeting on Thursday whether to award $2.27 million to PF Moon and Co. Inc, based in West Point, to do phase I improvements on the Spout Springs Water Reclamation Facility. Commissioners also discussed tweaking Hall County’s Codes of Ethics.
