Marine rescue units responding to reports of a capsized boat near Aqualand Marina found a dead man in Lake Lanier on Sunday, authorities said.

The body of Robert Armistead, 54, of Hoschton was recovered by the Hall County Fire Department’s dive team, according to Sgt. Kiley Sargent, Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

A caller reported the capsized boat at about 10:30 a.m., and the Hall County Fire Department responded with rescue units and a marine rescue boat, said Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell.

Law enforcement and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources also responded.

The responding units found a 12-14 foot Jon boat that had capsized about 10 feet from shore.

Some fishing gear and tackle were found. Upon investigating, marine rescue units found and recovered Armistead from the water, Kimbrell said.

Marine Rescue, Georgia State Patrol aviation, and law enforcement searched the area by shore sweep, boat search and air surveillance.

Members of the sheriff’s office dive team also searched for a potential second victim but determined there was no other victim.

Foul play is not suspected, Sargent said, and the body was sent to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy and toxicology screen.

The incident remains under investigation by the Department of Natural Resources.
