Johnson High assistant principal making progress after accident

POSTED: August 15, 2008 5:01 a.m.

An assistant principal at Johnson High School remained in an Atlanta hospital’s intensive care unit Sunday, two days after a one-car wreck on Poplar Springs Road.

"He is making progress each day," principal Damon Gibbs said of Mike Adcock’s condition. "We remain very optimistic."

Adcock was flown by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital after he was trapped in his truck for more than an hour Friday following the 6 a.m. wreck.

Doctors were successful in surgical efforts to stop the bleeding caused by the severe impact. He suffered a broken ankle, leg and pelvis and also will be treated for a broken rib that contributed to a collapsed lung.

He "remains on a ventilator at this point," Gibbs said.

Adcock is a second-year assistant principal who had served as a basketball and graduation coach at Flowery Branch High School and basketball coach at West Hall High School.
