Winder man, 18, drowns in Lake Lanier

POSTED: August 15, 2008 5:01 a.m.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office dive team recovered the body of an 18-year-old Winder man in Lake Lanier on Sunday evening after the man had become separated from his friends earlier in the day.

The man, whose name will not be released until the next of kin has been notified, and three friends were swimming near Old Federal campground in West Hall on Sunday afternoon when the 18-year-old "went under," said sheriff’s Maj. Jeff Strickland.

They were floating on a piece of Styrofoam and had decided to swim to the shore when the victim "went under and did not resurface," Strickland said. The Hall County fire department received the call at about 5 p.m., and the dive team searched for about an hour with no results. The sheriff’s office dive team eventually found the man at about 7:30 p.m., 43 yards from the shore in about 20 feet of water, Strickland said. The drowning is still being investigated.

This is the fifth drowning in Lake Lanier so far this year.
