An assistant principal at Johnson High School was in stable but in critical condition at an Atlanta hospital’s intensive care unit Friday after a one-car wreck on Poplar Springs Road, school officials said.

Mike Adcock was flown by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital after he was trapped in his truck for more than an hour following the 6 a.m. accident, Hall County school system spokesman Gordon Higgins said.

Damon Gibbs, principal at Johnson High School, said doctors apparently were successful in their emergency surgery efforts to stop the hemorrhaging caused by the severe impact.

Adcock is expected to undergo additional surgery for a broken ankle, leg and pelvis and also will be treated for a broken rib that contributed to a collapsed lung.

"Mike is still considered in critical condition," Gibbs said in a statement released at about 3:30 p.m. Friday. "He lost a lot of blood and is remaining sedated and on the ventilator due to his low blood pressure and injuries."

Gibbs said Adcock’s bone injuries were stabilized and further surgery would be performed "when his body is able to stand it."

Adcock was moved to the hospital’s intensive care unit Friday afternoon, Gibbs said.

School officials said Adcock’s truck left the road and hit a tree on Poplar Springs Road. Local Georgia State Patrol officials said a report had not been filed in the accident and could not provide additional information Friday.

"We’re all very concerned about Mike and his condition," Higgins said. "I know the thoughts and prayers of the people of Hall County would want to be with Mike Adcock and his family."

Higgins said this is Adcock’s second year as an assistant principal at Johnson High School. He said Adcock also has worked as a basketball and graduation coach at Flowery Branch High School and as a basketball coach at West Hall High School.
