Dr. Jay Hortenstine and Mrs. Sharon Hortenstine of Gainesville announce the engagement of their daughter Ms. Emily Craig Hortenstine to Mr. Matthew Todd McDowell, son of Dr. David McDowell and Mrs. Kathryn McDowell of Lilburn.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. Clayton White and the late Mrs. Laverne White of Kingsport, Tenn., and Mrs. Faye Hortenstine and the late Dr. C.B. Hortenstine of Florence, Ala.

She is a 2004 graduate of North Hall High School in Gainesville. She graduated in 2008 from The Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She is working on her master’s degree at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, N.C.

The groom-elect is the grandson of Mr. Leland McDowell and Mrs. Wilma McDowell of Bellevue, Neb., and Mr. Robert McAuliffe and the late Mrs. Lillian McAuliffe of Omaha, Neb.

He is a 2004 graduate of Parkview High School in Lilburn. He graduated in 2008 from The Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in materials science engineering. He is working on his doctoral degree at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

The couple plan to wed June 29, 2013, at Park Tavern in Piedmont Park in Atlanta.
