Every time the Chestatee Lady War Eagles step on the court, senior post Maegan Kenimer is going to make herself known to their opponent.

Kenimer is a consistent force on the court, both as a skill player and as a leader for her team.

“She’s one of the captains for our team this year,” noted coach Web Daniel.

Kenimer also leads by example. She tallied 12 points in a win against Lanier last Friday and 14 against West Hall to lead the team to a first-round win in the Lanierland Tournament on Saturday.

For her efforts, Kenimer is The Times Girls Athlete of the Week.

Since the beginning of the season, Kenimer and teammate Erin Clifford have been leading the Lady War Eagles in scoring, but the duo have a chemistry that extends beyond the court.

“They’re really best friends,” Daniel said. “In the game they pass well together, and they really get along well together.”

Daniel even considers Kenimer one of the best at her position in the area.

“She’s playing very well at the post,” Daniel said, “I think she’s the best post in the area. She’s signed with Brenau, so she’s already college-bound.”

Kenimer clearly has talent, and Daniel believes that other teams in the area know that she is a threat whenever she’s on the court. In the win against West Hall on Saturday, Daniel felt this was on display.

“Teams in the county know her,” he said. “They try to double team her as much as possible, so she tries to get the ball moving so the team can score.”

Daniel has seen Kenimer’s variety of skills, but he said that some people tend to underestimate her athleticism because of her 6-foot-2 height.

“Skill-wise, she has good footwork,” Daniel said. “She’s tall, but she’s very athletic for her size. Some people don’t realize that. I think she runs the floor very well also.”

Although her abilities are evident when she plays, there is something about Kenimer’s personality on and off of the court that adds to the team’s ability to work together.

“The girls love her. They voted her captain two years in a row,” Daniel said.

Kenimer’s command on the floor, ability to shoot and leadership skills have helped lead the Lady War Eagles to a 9-1 start to the season.

Chestatee looks to continue its winning ways when it takes on North Hall in the semifinals of the Lanierland tournament at 7 p.m. Thursday at North Hall High in Gainesville.
