Gainesville police are searching for two sets of robbers after an incident at SunTrust Bank on Thompson Bridge Road and an incident a couple of hours later at the Marathon convenience store on Industrial Boulevard.

Cpl. Joe Britte, a spokesman for the Gainesville Police Department, said the incidents are not related.

Two white men in their late 40s, each weighing about 200 pounds, robbed the bank at 1430 Thompson Bridge at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, Britte said.

One of the men had an assault rifle, he added. That suspect was wearing a red baseball cap, black jacket, light blue jeans and had a salt-and-pepper-colored beard, Britte said.

The other man, carrying a white plastic bag with the money, was wearing a black skull cap, black sunglasses, a black The North Face jacket, white gloves and light blue jeans.

The descriptions were obtained from bank surveillance footage, Britte said.

Britte said the men ran from the scene but police do not know in which direction. Officers and police dogs searched the area.

Police officers escorted the visibly shaken witnesses to a nearby office building. They appeared to be mostly employees of the bank.

Around 7 p.m., another armed robbery was reported at the Marathon convenience store, Wee Willy’s, at 1204 Industrial Boulevard.

Two white men produced handguns, demanded cash and ran from the store, according to Cpl. Kevin Holbrook, a spokesman with the Gainesville Police Department.

Officers and police dogs were searching the area Tuesday night, but few other details were available.

Anyone with information on either case can call the police tip line at 770-533-5873.
