Long wait for sidewalk finally ends

Floyd Road area neighbors celebrate new pedestrian path

POSTED: December 9, 2012 12:25 a.m.

Residents of the Floyd Road area, long in need of a sidewalk, got their light at the end of the tunnel.

Hall County Commissioner Ashley Bell held a sidewalk and streetlight dedication for improvements made to the Floyd Road area Saturday afternoon at New Gainesville Seventh-day Adventist Church on Floyd Road.

“Today is a special day. Because for so long ... people have been asking for the same thing,” Bell said.

Bell noted the less than ideal weather for what was supposed to be an outdoor event, comparing it to the long process for getting the sidewalk.

“Much like this day is dreary and kind of rainy, it kind of felt that way out here, because we’ve been asking for the same thing for so long, and trying to get the same thing, and the results just weren’t quite happening,” he said.

The Board of Commissioners began talking in 2010 about building sidewalks along Old Athens Road, Floyd Road and Brown Street as part of a three-phase project.

Saturday’s dedication marked the final part of that project.

Gainesville Councilwoman Myrtle Figueras complimented the community’s commitment to improving.

“You have to be committed to a purpose to find out what you really want,” she said.

In the past, heavy pedestrian traffic in the Floyd Road area had caused several accidents.

“You and I both know how many fatalities in the last 10 years we’ve had,” Bell said, speaking to the attendees. “And these were friends of mine growing up that would still be here today.”

Bell also showed good will to Jeff Stowe, who soon will take his seat on the commission, and who stood next to him at the podium.

“As my time here sunsets, and Jeff Stowe’s rises, you need to know that you have a commissioner who knows who you are, who understands your concerns,” he said. “So I felt (it was) no better day and opportunity to have Jeff here.”

Stowe defeated Bell in the Republican primary in January to earn the District 4 seat.

Saturday, Bell will be host of a thank-you dinner in appreciation for his time on the council.
