Your Views: Obesity plagues poor because healthier food is more costly

POSTED: December 8, 2012 1:00 a.m.

Clearly Sharon Fowler is unaware of the cause of obesity among the poor in our society. In many of the “poor” communities, grocery stores are not available, and fresh produce is nonexistent. Instead, calorie-laden food is available at a low cost.

The inclusion of money in food subsidies for farmers market purchases is going a long way in improving the types of fresh food for those on limited incomes.

I would suggest that Sharon see what she could purchase if she found herself having to live on a limited income. Would she be able to purchase the same food items she does today and pay for heating her home? I very much doubt it.
