Salvation Army reaches $10,000 goal after stationing man atop local business

POSTED: December 4, 2012 5:50 p.m.

Salvation Army Lt. Matt Cunningham went to the roof of Slack Auto Parts on Monday morning planning to stay as long as it took to raise $10,000, and came down Tuesday afternoon with his mission accomplished.

“I thought I was going to be up there for a week,” Cunningham said. “In the morning, it just hit like hot cakes.”

The Gainesville Salvation Army office hopes to help more than 700 families for Christmas, but its traditional Kettle Drive is five days shorter this year. The office serves Hall, Forsyth, Dawson, Lumpkin, Banks and Barrow counties. Cunningham said he saw black clouds pass over him early Tuesday and started thinking about acquiring a tent, but he reached the $10,000 mark at 1:36 p.m.

“It looked scary for a minute,” he said.
