Chief Judge Charles S. Wynne is one of a record 75 people nominated for a position on the Georgia Court of Appeals.

“Being on the Georgia Court of Appeals would be an honor and wonderful opportunity,” Wynne said. “I’m certainly mindful that there are many qualified applicants for this vacancy; I’ll give the application process my best effort.”

Wynne and 32 other people submitted applications to the Judicial Nominating Commission by the Nov. 19 deadline after being nominated, according to The Daily Report in Fulton County.

The Georgia Court of Appeals is made up of 12 judges and is the first to review many cases heard by trial courts that may have had legal errors.

“If this opportunity is successful, I’d be honored to serve. If not, I’ll be happy to continue to serve in my present capacity,” Wynne said.

Wynne was re-elected to his position on the Hall County State Court in 2008, where he has served since 2001.

The Daily Report also reported that co-chairman Randy Evans — as part of a subcommittee including himself, DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James and Augusta District Attorney Ashley Wright — would narrow the list of applicants to “a more manageable” 15 to 20 candidates prior to interviews on Dec. 12.

The commission will submit its recommendation to Gov. Nathan Deal, who ultimately makes the appointment.

The retirement of Judge A. Harris Adams created the vacancy. He retires effective Jan. 1.

A nonpartisan election would renew the six-year term, which is on the ballot for 2016.

In the 2012 election, each incumbent judge who ran was elected unopposed.

The appointment will be Deal’s fifth on the appellate level since he took office in January 2011.
