Know your opponent: A look at the four challengers in the football state quarterfinals

POSTED: November 27, 2012 11:40 p.m.

A week later, four area teams are still pushing forward in the high school football state playoffs.

Gainesville, North Hall, Buford and Jefferson are the local survivors and each faces another stout test on Friday. Here’s a look at each teams opponent in the state quarterfinals.

Harris County Tigers vs. Gainesville

Where: Tiger Stadium, Hamilton

Winner plays: Allatoona/Whitewater winner

Record: 8-4, Region 1-AAAAA champion

Against 2012 playoff teams: 5-2 (24.3 ppg, 22.3 papg)

Coach: Tommy Parks, ninth year at school (45-50)

History: Before this season, Harris County had never won or hosted a playoff game in its 56-year history. Maybe the trick was getting to play at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers enter this week on an eight-game winning streak and will be playing their third postseason game with homefield advantage.

Watch out for: RB Esaias Chapman (5-9, 180 Jr.); TE/DE Jay Ellison (6-2, 292 Sr.); QB Justin Wright (6-1, 180 Sr.); WR DiQuan Roberts (6-0, 170 Sr.)

Last week: Defeated Warner Robins, 31-21. The Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and led 31-7 at the end of three.

Offense: Harris County lines up in a spread, but is primarily a running team, leaning heavily on zone read plays. Chapman is focal point and has rushed for 1,607 yards and 12 touchdowns this season — Gainesville coach Bruce Miller lauded his ability to break tackles and find holes where there don’t appear to be any. Wright will throw some; he’s completed 53 percent of his passes for 1,396 yards, looking most often for Roberts and TaQuon Marshall, whom Miller calls a dangerous threat in the open field.

Defense: The Tigers operate primarily out of a 4-3 and feature an athletic secondary that Miller said “is just awesome.” Ellison, a college prospect with scholarship offers from multiple SEC and ACC schools, also attracts attention from his stand-up end position.

Miller anticipates the Tigers bringing pressure and said Gainesville quarterback Deshaun Watson won’t have a lot of time to make decisions.

Bottom line: It’s difficult to say what changed for Harris County, which began the season 0-4 and struggled to beat a Douglas County team that finished 2-8 in triple overtime in the fifth game of the year. Since then, the Tigers haven’t lost.

At this point in the season, no outcome is out of the question, but Gainesville’s high-powered offense poses a threat to any team when it’s clicking like it was in last week’s 61-42 win over Region 7-AAAAA champ Kell.

Peach County Trojans at North Hall

Where: The Brickyard, Gainesville

Winner plays: Washington County/St. Pius X winner

Record: 11-1, No. 2 Region 2-AAA

Against 2012 playoff teams: 8-1 (32.7 ppg, 14.9 papg)

Coach: Chad Campbell, sixth year at school (68-10)

History: Peach County is one of Class AAA’s most successful programs of recent years; the Trojans haven’t missed the postseason in more than 20 seasons and they’ve won state titles three times since 2005. They’ve advanced to the state semifinals in each of the last three seasons and lost in the state title game last year to Burke County.

Watch out for: WR Demarcus Robinson (6-2, 205 Sr.); LB Chris Jackson (5-10, 180 Sr.); RB Keyshawn Lowe (So.); QB Greg Williams (Jr.)

Last week: Defeated Pierce County, 43-15. After leading 15-7 at halftime, Peach County pulled away with four second-half touchdowns.

Offense: Peach County features Robinson, a Clemson recruit and one of the state’s top receivers, but will run slightly more than pass.

North Hall coach Bob Christmas said Peach County is based in the I-formation, but utilizes a variety of shifts, trades and motions, and often runs out of a one-back set.

Lowe has emerged as the top ground threat and has run for more than 400 yards in two playoff games.

Defense: Peach County lines up primarily in a 3-3-5 alignment, but Christmas expects it to look more like a 5-3 against North Hall’s wishbone offense. The fast, physical linebackers, who Christmas said “fill (gaps) extremely fast,” may be the standout group for a unit that held Pierce County to 5 rushing yards on 18 carries last week.

Bottom line: North Hall will have its hands full Friday night — no surprise at this stage of the playoffs, and even less of one when the opponent is as traditionally successful as Peach County. The key for North Hall will be to seize an early lead, as it did in last week’s 13-9 win over Morgan County, and avoid trying to play catch-up.

Carver-Columbus Tigers vs. Buford

Where: Columbus Memorial Stadium, Columbus

Winner plays: Thomson/Cartersville winner

Record: 11-1, Region 2-AAA champion

Against 2012 playoff teams: 7-1 (28.4 ppg, 16.1 papg)

Coach: Dell McGee, eighth year at school (88-18)

Watch out for: QB Torrance McGee (Jr.); WR Marqui Hawkins (Sr.); RB Danny Ryles (Sr.); RB Brandon Thomas (Sr.)

Last week: Defeated Rockmart, 45-16. The Tigers scored the first 33 points of the game and rolled to a big win with 480 yards of total offense, including 334 on the ground.

Need to know: This will be the third meeting in two years and the fourth in the last three for Buford and Carver-Columbus. The Tigers won in the 2010 regular season, but Buford won both games last season, including a 28-13 victory in the Class AA state semifinals.

Carver-Columbus has risen to prominence under McGee, going 3-7 in his first season and winning at least 11 and reaching the quarterfinals in every season since. This year, the Tigers have won nine straight since a loss to Class AAAAAA quarterfinalist Colquitt County.

Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes at Jefferson

Where: Memorial Stadium, Jefferson

Winner plays: Early County/Greater Atlanta Christian winner

Record: 10-2, No. 2 Region 1-AA

Against 2012 playoff teams: 7-2 (29.8 ppg, 15.1 papg)

Coach: Jason Strickland, 1st year at school (27-18 in four previous years at Lamar County)

Watch out for: QB Romarius Gaulden (5-11, 155 Jr.); RB Ron Swain (5-7, 175 Sr.); DB DJ Smith (5-8, 160 Sr.)

Last week: Defeated Vidalia, 52-20. The Purple Hurricanes cruised past the Region 2-AA champ, outgaining Vidalia 344-170, with 330 yards coming on the ground.

Need to know: The Purple Hurricanes’ wing-T offense allows them to showcase multiple rushing threats. Gaulden (898 yards, 14 touchdowns) and Swain (822, 10) are the primary ball carriers, but four players have at least 460 rushing yards on the season.

In the defensive backfield, Smith is dangerous to opposing passing games, evidenced by his 10 interceptions.
