Hospital rewards teens for their volunteer service

The Medical Center Auxiliary honored 100 teen volunteers at an appreciation dinner Thursday at Gainesville First United Methodist Church.

"The teen volunteer program is a ‘win-win’ for the teens and the Medical Center," said Nancy Colston, executive director of the Medical Center Foundation. "The program gives teens the opportunity to get a head start on exploring possible medical careers, and the services the teens provide are very helpful to the patients, visitors and staff."

Charlotte Kaufman, president of The Medical Center Auxiliary, presented $500 Teen Scholarship Awards to Rashelle Edwards and Noylin Mouthaan.

Edwards has been a teen volunteer since 2004 and Mouthaan has been a volunteer since 2003.

Callie Flack, volunteer coordinator, presented the Andrew J. Dockery Teen Volunteer of the Year Award to Jenny Mancin, who has been a volunteer since 2004.

She is a graduate of North Hall High School and will attend North Georgia College & State University to pursue a nursing degree.

She also received a $500 scholarship from the Medical Center Auxiliary.

Other awards presented included:

  • T-shirt design: Jenny Mancin.
  • Essay: Veronica Leon, $100 first prize, "A Summer Among the Stars;" Chelsea Thomas, second prize, "Volunteering: Creating Magic;" Elizabeth Niedfeldt, third prize, "Stars in the Storms."
  • Volunteers: Some 59 volunteers received awards for completing 50 or more hours of service or more including; Mera Patrick, 600 hours; Jenny Mancin, 500 hours; and Courtney Brooks, Rashelle Edwards, Ashley Goodson and Morgan Peacock, 400 hours each.
