The Believers Concert Band will offer a musical salute to the nation’s veterans with a concert entitled "Our Proud Heritage" at 3 p.m. on Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11.

The free concert will be held at Gainesville First United Methodist Church on Thompson Bridge Road.

The program will feature retired Navy Cmdr. Thomas Metcalf as guest conductor. The Believers Band will pay a special tribute to "The Star Spangled Banner," presenting narrations from Presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy and other patriotic selections.

Veterans and their families will receive recognition during the performance.

"We want to offer an uplifting, positive and patriotic program for our veterans and our country. We hope you will be in attendance, to honor the heritage of America and become refreshed," band director Richard Petty said.

In his 33-year career, Metcalf has performed for kings, queens, princes, princesses, Pope John Paul II and U.S. presidents.

He conducted the band that accompanied Bob Hope on a world USO tour. He conducted the Naval Academy Band and Glee Club for the 150th anniversary of the Naval Academy.

Metcalf is one of only 28 men in its 160-year history of "The Navy’s Oldest and Finest Band, who has earned the position of Leader and Director of The United States Naval Academy’s Band."
