As Election Day approaches Tuesday, two local civil rights organizations want to ensure that all Gainesville voters have the opportunity to make it to the polls.

The Newtown Florist Club and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Gainesville/Hall County have joined forces to provide free rides on Election Day to Gainesville residents. Anyone interested should call the Newtown Florist Club at 770-718-1343 anytime now through Tuesday.

Volunteer drivers will pick up voters at their homes between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Election Day. Voters should provide their name, address and contact number when setting up their ride.

“A lot of people don’t have transportation to get out, especially the elderly in the community,” said Phyllis Brewer, president of the NAACP. “For some, we’re more accessible than the public transit systems, and it’ll keep people from having to stand out at a bus stop in the cold.”

Residents can also call the number to find out where their precinct is if they are unsure.

While Newtown Florist Club has organized these rides in the past with other organizations, such as local churches, Brewer said the NAACP is excited to be involved in the process this year.

“Just get out there and vote,” Brewer said.
