Flowery Branch boys, girls cross country headed to state

Flowery Branch’s boys and girls cross country teams are both headed to state after the boys won the Region 8-AAAAA championship and the girls finished in second place Thursday in Conyers. It marked the program's second straight win at region.

Taylor Fiorello led the boys with a third place finish, Nick Ashmead was fourth and Jake Shewbert was fifth. James Slavik came in eighth, Clayton Thayer took ninth and Miguel Martinez rounded out the top 10.

For the girls, Cassie Ward finished second overall and Lauren Kirk was fourth.

Gainesville’s boys team also qualified for the state meet with a fourth place finish, led by Drew Wright in 21st with a time of 17 minutes and 59 seconds. Tanner Peacock was 22nd with an 18:04, and Alex Longoria was 23rd at 18:05.

Breanna Fair was the only Gainesville girl to qualify for state, finishing sixth overall with a time of 20:16.

Flowery Branch and Gainesville will run in the state meet Nov. 10 in Carrollton.

REGION 8-AA CHAMPIONSHIP: Grant Hoffman was the Eagles’ top finisher in third place with a time of 17 minutes and 54.10 seconds as Riverside Military Academy won the boys team championship at the 8-AA region championship meet on Thursday in Lexington.

Chris Oster came in fifth with a time of 18:10.61, and Taylor Calderon was sixth at 18:14.48. Lexx Joya finished in 10th place with a 18:36.35. Ricardo Rivera and Christian Mull finished in 21st and 22nd, respectively.

Riverside will travel to the state meet Nov. 10 in Carrollton.
