Cornelia seminar aims to help employers avoid litigation

The Habersham Employer Committee and the Georgia Department of Labor will co-host a seminar for employers on how to motivate employees and avoid unnecessary employment litigation.

The seminar, titled “One Call — That’s all: Avoiding Common Employment Liability,” is set for 8:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 30 at the Cornelia Community House, 601 Wyly St. in Cornelia.

Jonathan Martin of Macon, a partner with Constangy, Brooks and Smith law firm and the former chairman of the Georgia Employer Committee, will lead the seminar.

The seminar will focus on the basics of discrimination law, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the effect the amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act will have on businesses.

It will also help employers understand how to avoid costly employment litigation, including social media policies and practices.

The seminar is designed for business owners, human resource managers, supervisorsand entrepreneurs. Cost is $40 per person.
