Area residents who don’t have a precinct to call home have until Tuesday to register to vote in the Nov. 6 presidential election.

And there are several ways to accomplish the task, including downloading an application from the Georgia Secretary of State’s website and mailing it to the agency.

“As long as it’s postmarked by (Tuesday), it will be entered into the system,” said Charlotte Sosebee, Hall County’s elections director. “That’s one of the reasons why the day after (Tuesday), we’re not able to give a number of (total registered voters) because we’re still receiving applications.”

Residents also can register at a library or a public assistance office, such as the Department of Family and Children Services or at Department of Motor Vehicle Safety driver’s license posts.

“The most certain way is to come to the (elections) office,” Sosebee said. “It eliminates that third party of handling applications. You’re put in the system a whole lot sooner than you would (be) if the application is sent through the mail.”

The Hall County Elections Office is at 2875 Browns Bridge Road, Gainesville.

Residents can confirm their voter registration status through the Secretary of State’s website.

If you have submitted a voter registration application within the past three to four weeks and your name does not appear on the site, contact the elections office to check the status of the application, the Secretary of State’s office advises.

To register to vote, residents must be a U.S. citizen, a legal county resident, 18 years old on Nov. 6, not be a convicted felon and they can’t have been found mentally incompetent by a judge, according to the secretary of state.

Since the July 2 registration deadline for the July 31 primary, the Hall County Elections Office has added more than 1,500 registered voters, Sosebee said.

“Each day, there are approximately 50 or more people visiting our office to either change their address, to register to vote or inquiring if their registration is active in order to vote (Nov. 6),” she added.

“I am pleased with the numbers we have added,” Sosebee said, estimating another 200 or so will register by Tuesday. “The main thing is getting on the rolls and voting.”

She said Hall County has a total of about 83,000 registered voters.
