Three Bulldogs earn SEC honors

POSTED: October 1, 2012 7:57 p.m.

Three Georgia football players have earned Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors following the Bulldogs’ fifth consecutive win, a 55-41 victory over Tennessee on Saturday in Athens.

True freshmen tailbacks Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley were two of three players to be named Tri-Freshmen of the Week along with Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, who was also named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week.

Gurley tallied 130 yards on 24 attempts and three touchdowns against Tennessee. It was Gurley’s fourth game over 100 yards in his five collegiate contests.

Marshall recorded a career-high 164 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries against the Volunteers.

Senior cornerback Sanders Commings was also named the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week alongside Ole Miss freshman linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche.

Commings tallied five tackles and had a pair of interceptions in the final six minutes of the game to stop Tennessee’s attempt at a comeback.

This is the third honor of its kind for Gurley and the first for Marshall. This marks the first SEC weekly award for Commings.

The Bulldogs travel to South Carolina on Saturday in Columbia. The game will be televised by ESPN at 7 p.m.
