Golfers at Chicopee Woods will tee it up for a good cause on Thursday. Spread out over the course, 216 golfers will play in the Medical Center Open, with proceeds benefitting My Sister’s Place in Gainesville.
The Medical Center Open has raised more than $2 million dollars since its inception, along with more than $3.6 million raised for local charities, according to Chicopee Woods Director of Golf Jim Arendt.
Play in the Medical Center Open starts at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
Also this week, Chicopee Woods is hosting its Senior Championship on Saturday and Sunday. Players at least 50 years old will play 36 holes to decide the winner.
The Senior Championship is an individual stroke play format. Walter Hope is the defending champion.
ATLANTA BRAVES: Atlanta wraps up the regular season with a three-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates, starting today in Pittsburgh. The Braves have already secured a postseason berth. As it stands, Atlanta will likely host St. Louis in the first round of the playoffs.
Today, left-hander Paul Maholm (13-10, 3.71 ERA) will take the mound for his final regular season appearance. Since coming over to the Braves, he’s 4-4 this season with a 3.65 ERA. Maholm was very efficient in his last outing, throwing 6 2/3 innings and set the table for a shutout win over the Marlins last Wednesday. He retired 13 of the first 14 hitters faced. Then on Tuesday, Tommy Hanson (13-9, 4.38) will throw for Atlanta.
Last Thursday, he allowed two early runs but the Braves rallied for a 6-2 win against the Marlins, snapping a seven-start span without picking up a win for Hanson.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: The Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are heading in very different directions. Georgia (5-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) is coming off a huge 51-44 win against Tennessee on Saturday in Athens, with a trip to South Carolina (5-0, 3-0) looming this weekend.
Meanwhile, Georgia Tech (2-3, 1-2 ACC) is coming off a 49-28 non-conference loss to Middle Tennessee State in Atlanta, with a trip to Clemson coming this weekend.
ATLANTA FALCONS: After a last-minute 30-28 win against Carolina on Sunday, Atlanta (4-0) plays its next four games are against non-division opponents, starting with a game at the Washington Redskins on Sunday.
HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: After running off its second consecutive region win to open the season, Chestatee (3-1, 2-0 Region 8-AAAA) will face nonregion opponent Johnson on Friday in Oakwood.
The War Eagles are coming off a 24-20 win against fifth-ranked Stephens County on Friday.
Gainesville (4-1, 3-0 Region 8-AAAAA) also looks to stay unbeaten in region with a trip to Athens to face Cedar Shoals on Friday. After Friday’s big Region 7-AAA win at Dawson County, North Hall (3-1, 1-0) stays in region play with this week’s game at East Hall.
Flowery Branch (3-2, 3-0 Region 8-AAAAA) visits Apalachee on Friday in Winder.
