Hiker rescued after steep fall in Dawson County

POSTED: September 28, 2012 11:25 p.m.

An injured hiker was airlifted in a dramatic rescue Friday after a fall at Cochran Falls off Ga. 52 West in northern Dawson County.

Emergency personnel hiked into the location because the terrain made automobile access impossible, according to Dawson County Emergency Services Battalion Chief Milton Keller.

At about 4:50 p.m. Keller confirmed the victim, a man in his 20s, had been airlifted to safety.

The rescue was televised live on Atlanta television by WSB as the hiker was strapped to a gurney by rescuers and lifted by helicopter from the remote site to an area where medical personnel were waiting.

Keller said the man was conscious but did have multiple injuries.

WSB reported that he fell about 25 feet as he and a friend were walking along the waterfall. The station reported that he had several broken bones and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

No additional information on the man’s identity or condition were available.
