Local sports briefs: A's advance in North Georgia tourney

POSTED: July 28, 2008 5:00 a.m.

The Gainesville A’s defeated Douglasville Post 45 10-7 in the opening round of the American Legion North Georgia Tournament on Thursday at Cherokee High School in Canton.

Luis Delgado went 4-for-5 for Gainesville (22-11). Will Rowlett and Zach Bennett each had three hits. Charlie Newman and P.J. Krauss each had two hits.

"I’m pleased with how we hit," A’s coach Clay Haynes said. "It makes things a lot easier to play in the winners bracket."

Justin Fordham picked up the win for the A’s in relief for starter Josh Wright.

The A’s will play Rockdale/Alpharetta at 4 p.m. today.

Part-time reporters sought

The Times is seeking part-time sports reporters to assist in our coverage of the upcoming high school football season.

Aspiring journalism students or those with a background in the field are preferred, but we are willing to train capable candidates.

The ability to produce lively, full-length stories under a tight deadline is a must, as is ability to keep comprehensive stats.

Familiarity with AP style is a plus.
