Dawson County tops Buford to clinch region's top seed

Jenna Abbott struck out 11 in a complete-game win, and Dawson County held off Buford 5-3 on Wednesday in Buford to clinch the No. 1 seed for the Region 7-AAA softball tournament starting Saturday.

The Lady Tigers (17-6-1, 7-0) will play No. 8-seed West Hall at noon Saturday at East Hall Park in the opening round of the tournament. The Class AA defending champion and second seeded Lady Wolves (19-2, 6-1) will face No. 7 East Hall, also at noon.

Abbott (10-1), who allowed seven hits and three walks, also contributed four hits and first-inning RBI triple, and Joy Lewis added a two-run single to put Dawson County ahead 3-0 after one inning.

The Lady Tigers extended their lead in the fifth on a two-run double by Carly Gilreath, and then Abbott held off a Buford charge in the bottom of the inning, where the Lady Wolves scored three runs.

“It’s just a boost for the entire team to go to Buford and get a win and get the No. 1 seed,” said Dawson County coach Jimmy Pruett. “Confidence-wise is the biggest thing for us.”

The Lady Tigers got the win against Buford’s ace, Bria Bush (12-2), who pitched six innings and fanned 10 batters, but also allowed 12 hits and five earned runs.

Buford was led offensively by Remington Hasty (1 for 3, RBI), Jordan Deep (2 for 3, two doubles) and Tessa Daniels (2 for 4, RBI).

Volleyball

Maggie Roper had 11 kills and eight digs to lead Buford volleyball over North Hall 25-22, 25-17 on Wednesday in Gainesville.

Kaitlin Tatum added six kills, Tori Payton had 20 assists, Hannah Manley recorded five kills and Mikhayla Riegel had 11 digs for North Hall.

Buford (15-14) plays Johnson on Tuesday in Oakwood.
