Gainesville wins 5 matches at Flowery Branch tourney

Led by Anna Walker and Kaylin Walden, Gainesville won five of six matches Saturday at the Battle at the Branch volleyball tournament in Flowery Branch.

Walker recorded 73 kills, 22 service points, 11 digs and eight aces throughout the day, and Walden had 115 assists, 56 service points and nine aces.

Gainesville defeated Winder-Barrow (25-14, 25-18), Habersham Central (25-17, 25-13), Johnson (25-6, 25-18), George Walton Academy (25-22, 25-18) and North Hall (25-21, 25-16) before falling to Oconee County 25-16, 25-19.

Lauren Carter added a team-high 39 digs for Gainesville, Stasha Hopkins had 33 service points, seven aces and 32 kills, and Grace Miller recorded 45 service points and eight blocks.

The Red Elephants (23-7, 5-1) play in a quad match Tuesday at Oconee County in Watkinsville.

JEFFERSON WINS SILVER DIVISION: Senior Sarah Wood had 46 kills to lead the Lady Dragons to a top finish in the silver division of the Ampest Spikefest volleyball tournament Saturday.

Jefferson defeated AR Johnson (25-8, 25-16), Mt. Zion (25-21, 25-11) and Warner Robins (25-15, 25-21) in the silver bracket after falling to Houston County (25-18, 25-11) in the opening match of the day.

Grace Williamson added 31 assists and 14 aces for Jefferson.

The Lady Dragons travel to Bogart on Monday to play North Oconee.

WEST HALL WINS FOUR AT THE BRANCH: Laykin Herford had 100 assists and 12 aces, and Kelsi Jones had 50 kills and three blocks to lead West Hall to a 4-2 day at the Battle at the Branch. The Lady Spartans finished as runners up in the silver bracket, defeating Lakeview (25-22, 25-16), Salem (25-9, 25-13), Loganville (25-23, 25-12) and Tucker (25-20, 25-14), and falling to Oconee County (25-9, 25-16) and Habersham Central (33-31, 25-23).

LeNiesha Kearse added 40 digs, 45 kills and 11 blocks and Carrie Ruiz had five aces, 13 kills and 23 digs for West Hall (19-12, 3-3), which plays Thursday at Lanier against Berkmar.

NORTH HALL WINS THREE MATCHES: Sydney Cleveland had 26 kills, 8 aces, 3 blocks and 10 digs to lead the Lady Trojans to three wins in five matches at the Battle at the Branch volleyball tournament Saturday in Flowery Branch.

North Hall defeated Flowery Branch (25-14, 25-22), Chestatee (25-11, 25-20 and Madison County (25-11, 25-8) before falling to Tucker (25-20, 25-23) and Gainesville (25-21, 25-16).

Kristina Gregory added 70 assists, six aces and 10 kills on the day for North Hall, Makenzie Bryant added 25 digs, eight kills and four aces and Allie Staub recorded 14 kills, eight aces and eight digs. Sarah Yoder finished with 12 kills and two blocks.

North Hall hosts East Hall, St. Pius X and Decatur on Tuesday in Gainesville.

LADY LIONS GRAB TWO WINS: Lakeview Academy went 2-2 on Saturday at the Battle at the Branch, defeating Salem (25-13, 25-13) and Loganville (25-9, 23-25, 15-12), and falling to West Hall (25-22, 25-16) and Oconee County (25-17, 25-16).

Katie White had 19 kills, 29 digs and three aces on the day for the Lady Lions, Shelby Ross had 15 kills, six aces, nine digs and nine blocks, Delaney Jarrett added 26 assists and 20 digs and Bailey Towles contributed 22 assists, 24 digs and 11 aces. Samantha Versteeg had 32 kills.

Lakeview plays on Tuesday at George Walton in Monroe.

NORTH GEORGIA GETS WIN: The North Georgia Christian Lady Chargers beat the Unity Christian Lady Lions 25-10, 25-19, 25-11 on Saturday. Taylor Stewart had 12 service aces and served for 17 points, and Jennifer Mullican added six kills and three blocks. The Lady Chargers (4-3) play Heritage Christian Academy at 5 p.m. Monday in Oakwood.

Cross country

Tori Mullinax led the Chestatee girls cross country team to a top finish Saturday at the Clear Creek Invitational in East Elijay.

Mullinax, one of five Lady War Eagles in the top 10, came in second with a time of 19:39. Sara Beth English finished third (19:40), Shelby Bennett fifth (21:12), Maggee Wilson sixth (21:39) and Paige Williams ninth (22:37).
Yaritza Carrillo and Abbie Cliché placed 12th and 15th overall for the Class AAAA 4th-ranked Lady War Eagles.

WAR EAGLE RUNNERS SECOND: The Chestatee boys team finished second in a matchup with Dalton, Murray County and Gilmer. The War Eagles had three runners medal, with Jack Carnes placing fourth with a time of 16:55, Jose Reyes-Lavalle eighth (17:06) and Edgar Guerrero was ninth (17:13). Jason Dang (17:18), Alex Bache (17:56), Logan Brock (18:02), and Bart Velasquez (18:37) rounded out the varsity with new personal records for this course.

In Junior Varsity action, Chestatee boys had five finishers medaling in the top ten and the girls had all 6 runners place.
