College scoreboard: Sept. 17

The Piedmont College volleyball team extended its winning streak to six matches with a pair of non-conference victories over LaGrange College and Covenant College Saturday in Cave Arena. The Lady Lions downed LaGrange 3-0 before capping the day with a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Scots.

In the opening victory over LaGrange, Piedmont handled the visiting Panthers 25-14, 25-19, 25-21. Six different players recorded at least four kills for the Lions, highlighted by nine from Courtney Bradshaw and eight from Kaitlin Norman, who also posted a team-high nine digs. Katheryn Knarr (16) and Ashley Fannon (13) combined for 29 assists.

In the second match, Piedmont downed the Scots (7-3) 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 22-25 and 15-11. Norman again posted the team-high in kills with 13, while Jennifer Opper and Mallory Leary pitched in with 12 apiece. Knarr (29) and Xandy Green (24) combined for 53 assists, while Katie Byrd (19) and Norman (18) tallied 37 digs.

PIEDMONT WOMEN FALL TO FERRUM: The Piedmont College women’s soccer team dominated the offensive end of the field but could not come up with the equalizing goal Saturday as the Lady Lions fell 2-1 at Ferrum College in the program’s first-ever USA South Athletic Conference match. Ferrum held a 2-0 lead at half and held off a late barrage of goals to secure the Panthers’ third victory of the season.

Early goals by Casey Johnson and Megan Funck, with an assist by Johnson, came just three minutes apart in the game’s 24th and 27th minute to give Ferrum a 2-0 lead at intermission.

Piedmont’s Laura Goodwin cut the deficit in half in the 67th minute and the Lady Lions continued to pepper the Ferrum goal but could not break through to even the score in the game’s final period.

LIONS DRAW WITH FERRUM: The Piedmont College men’s soccer team opened the conference portion of its schedule Friday with a 1-1 double-overtime draw with host Ferrum College in the school’s first-ever contest as a member of the USA South Athletic Conference.

James Thomas’ header goal on an assist from Vincent Thomas in the game’s 42nd minute was the lone score of the first half, until the host Panthers equalized just four minutes into the second period on a penalty kick by Christian Turcios. The PK was awarded after a Ferrum pass inside the box struck a Piedmont player’s hand.

LADY SAINTS TIED FOR FIFTH: After the opening round of the Montevallo/Full Moon BBQ Invitational, the North Georgia College & State women’s golf team tied for fifth with Shorter College with a score of 316 on Monday.

Senior Catalina Olarte currently leads the Lady Saints with a 75 that has her tied for third individually. Sophomore Abbey Gill carded a 79 on the first 18 to place her in a tie for 18th.

YOUNG HARRIS IN EIGHTH: The Young Harris College women’s golf team is in eighth place after Monday’s first round of the Coastal Georgia Fall Invitational at the King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort in St. Simons Island.
The Mountain Lions shot 397 on the par 72, 5,900-yard layout at the King and Prince Golf Course. Northwood University leads the tournament after carding a 314 in the first round.

Kelsey McEntyre shot a 79 for the Lady Mountain Lions and is tied for seventh place overall.

Play concludes with the final round at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
