College scoreboard: Sept. 16

North Georgia College & State University used three first-half goals to defeat Young Harris College 4-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women’s soccer match on Saturday in Dahlonega.

Megan Morrow scored the first goal for the Lady Saints (7-0, 1-0 Peach Belt Conference) of the game and her first of the season three minutes into the match as the ball bounced around in the box off a deflected shot. Kelly Penston scored her third goal of the season as Emily Bowen fed her the ball at the top of the box.

Penston then deftly placed the ball into the back of the net to put the Saints up 2-0 just 10 minutes later.

Caroline Wallace capped the first half scoring for North Georgia as she cleaned up a free kick from Morrow.

Morrow recorded a second assist in the second half when Sophia Matonak scored in the 54th minute.

MOUNTAIN LIONS TOP SAINTS: Andreas Pechmann’s penalty kick midway through the second half gave Young Harris College a 3-2 Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer victory over North Georgia College & State University on Saturday in Dahlonega.

The Mountain Lions, who are ranked No. 18 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, improved to 5-0-0 overall and to 1-0-0 in the Peach Belt while North Georgia fell to 2-3-0 and 0-1-0.

YOUNG HARRIS FALLS AT GEORGIA COLLEGE: The Young Harris College men’s tennis team finished up play at the Georgia College Fall Championships on Saturday at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility in Milledgeville. Gabriel Oliveira picked up the lone win by the Mountain Lions as he defeated Lander University’s Adam Jonsson 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in singles.

MOUNTAIN LIONS PLACE FIFTH: Young Harris finished in fifth place out of 19 teams in the women’s 5K event with 168 points at the Mercer RunFit Invitational on Saturday in Macon.

Nicole Smith was the top runner for the Mountain Lions, as she came in eighth place with a time of 19 minutes, 50 seconds, while Ciara Wood also recorded a top-10 finish as she came in 10th with an effort of 19:56.

The Mountain Lions men finished in sixth place in the 16-team men’s 8K event with 153 points. Alex Bitok was the top finisher for Young Harris as he came in 13th place.

NORTH GEORGIA TAKES 10TH AT MERCER: The North Georgia College & State University women’s cross country team competed in their third meet of the season Saturday morning, traveling to the Mercer RunFit Sports Invitational. The Saints finished 10th overall in the 19-team meet.

Emily Beusse once again paced the way for North Georgia, cruising home ninth overall in a time of 19:51. Meagan Anstett was second for the Saints, finishing 38th in a time of 21:18.
